ajax auto-horntootin

I'm just putting the finishing touches on my first website that uses Ajax. Behold! MagicHatFilms.com! If anyone's interested in the code to make those sexy dis/appearing sections, I can post the basic template that Roger hooked up, and then the ins and outs of applying it to some real content.

I build this website for my homie Justin, who as you can see, has some badass mothafuckin camera gear. He's also one of my best friends out here, a burner, our age, and a really good filmmaker - you can see his stuff on the site. Y'all would love this guy. Course, it's hard to swing Director as a day job when you're first starting out. So he applied for a low-interest arts loan of some kind, to the tune of 20k or so, and got it! Used that money to buy all the gear, and only has to rent it out a few days a month to make his payments, and that's with the lowest prices in town. He gets to work with lots of indie filmmakers, he owns his own shit, and now he's got a sick website. Pretty sweet gig if you ask me.

all my flash people stand up!

yoyoyoyoyo

SO for the record. who fucks with Flash? I know R2 is up in that shit right now, and I know he ain't the only one. Whose down with actionscript? I am becoming so. I'm mad deep in it right now too - I'm about to finish my first flash website. VisualInfinity dot com, but it's not there yet. Basically what I did was thoroughly pimp a preexisting template that my client had. Or, to be more precise via an analogy: once you've taken apart and put back together every component of a bike, you pretty much know how to build one from scratch.

So what are your flash projects that you're currently working on? What are your flash hopes and dreams that you'd do if you had a crack team of flash ninjas at your disposal? Me, I'd make an open-source data visualization engine, and then ppl could use it for the following imaginary purposes (web 3.0, what now!?):

  • A program that takes your myspace, facebook, or whathaveyour account and creates a solar system of your friends, with their proximity to you based on your amount of interaction with them and the size of their planetoid being the amount of content they have in their profile. rate of spin is how often they update. Browse your network in a rocketship.
  • OR (different application) Feed it census data, and have it display it as a garden.
  • Or use it to organize your files in 3-d space (with wormholes!)! Keep track of scattered bits of text, images, sounds and movie files you want to incorporate into a larger project. in 3-d space.
  • Organize every idea you've ever had. (using a bigass multitouch diaplay (make your own!), naturally).
  • BROWSE FILES LIKE THEY DO IN HACKERS.
These are my techno-weeny wet dreams. Tell me yours.

Also, speaking of flash, scriptaculous is a good way to do some basic basic flash moves with javascript and ajax. Like having things on a website fade in and out with a click, or zoom off screen, etc, all without reloading the page. Here's one page (of many) demonstrating all teh sweet moves you can bust, basically by copying and pasting code they give you.
Roger is schooling me in these ways, and I will have the results of my first foray into that tomorrow.

oh! More Flash ninja-ery! (that roger told me about). behold, TWEENER!
From the site:

Tweener is a Class used to create tweenings and other transitions via ActionScript code for projects built on the Flash platform.

Tweener basicallly let's you tween things in flash using actionscript and setting the numbers for everything, instead of using the timeline. But here's the kicker: it's ported to javascript, which you can use to manipulate parts of a website. Much like scriptaculous, you once again have flash without flash.

Oh and finally, I made a new portfolio with some new shit. Nothing crazy, but a hell of a lot more professional than telling ppl to go to my flickr site, and see a buncha pictures of my houseparties. But not all the new shit is up there yet, I'll let you know when it is. I used carbonmade, a nice free and very web 2.0 portfolio-making site which some of y'all may find useful as well. Says it does flash and video portfolios to, but i haven't looked into it. Squidelephant.Carbonmade.com, yo.

And I'm out.

balarrf

So I'm sitting here sick on my ass for days frustrated with life and my lack of accomplishments when lo and behold outcomes from apple new macbooks and pros, basically the same shit though to be honest, still it's time so I'll get one. but ground rules I've set.

one, as much as possible, live the air lifestyle, that is to say, I will not download anything I can stream or host online. obviously I'll have a temporary download folder and a 300gb internal, but that gets used up faster than most realize. of course I'll have a few dozen terabytes of externals, but you can't lug those around everywhere, either... this way I'll have what I need for: (A) a streamline workstation, (B) an arkaos video mixing machine (C) an HD film editing suite with reserved power and additional storage modules (i.e. firewire800 terabyte bricks)

so on the bricks, HD video content, maybe some songs and movies I'm really worried I won't be able to find or download after the apocalypse, possibly a few tidily indexed folders of texts I've written. but the internal? what will go on the internal 300 gb drive?

besides all the applications of course. OS X.5 with all the works; FCP suite2, the CS3 suite, arkaos, all the 3rd party programs I can't survive without, that should take up 20 to well nigh 60gb, possibly even 100gb, not counting the media content.

So how do you make room? is this where the "Air" lifestyle comes in?

obviously no text documents, I will strictly use google documents only.

NO MP3S. If I have to download them (for video edits, etc) I'll download them to my external drive. I will listen to music I can stream, hopefully compiling a blogpot linkbrary, a library or index of songs links like a playlist. ask for pirated music? well for daft punk they have a myspace, and if they didn't sure I could make an exception if I couldn't host it online which I can. However, I would prefer free music as opposed to stolen music like britney spears and antinapster bands like metallica anyway...

third, no porn or videos I can stream from youtube, vimeo, etc... obviously VEOH requires you to download the video, so I can download films from time to time like a free rental, but unless I back them up to external, or dvd, or upload them to my server for safekeeping, they will be deleted after I view them...

it's important to create indexes and references of the files because just like they get lost on the desktop, believe me they get moved if you just leave them out on the streets of internet...

and remember, this isn't korea kids, we live in the united states of babylon, pretty much the last 3rd world nation without nationwide wifi, sure it sucks, and sure they're plenty of places without wifi... so remember that 300gb harddrive can come in useful sometimes. just don't make a habit out of downloading everything to the drive... I really like the idea of temporary folders, shit to be stored temporarily until you can get them on your server or at least on a plugin drive...

so the other thing was I was talking to maitland thru googlechat's aol instant messenger feature, so fuck text chatting programs too, ichat is for AVchat only, tools.

but I digress. I broke my baby camera's screen, so waiting on the freemasony's fixin it. but I was bored so I plugged my big camera into imovie08, and it works, so you weren't sold before...

anyway when I feel better maitland and I are going to film with the big camera at the laundromat.

I wrote a scene in google documents called " 'laundroma "

I've got it all worked out, I won't need any help with it, I'll just go with maitland and film him doing laundry, and then going into the machine out into another world. I'll probably need help with greenscreening the another world bit at some other point, but regaurdless, it'd be a cool movie just if he climbs in, and cut to him climbing out changed and affected, soaking wet...

well kevin's shit looks hyphy doesn't it?

I think he might be able to help, that is if I can get my after effects shit together. which brings us all to kelly peach.

3d stuff

Hey I'm Kevin Albert. I designed the 3d robot on the massive awhile back. This is pretty much, a bunch of random 3d stuff I've made. I'd have more, but I lost most of it with my old hard drive (rest in peace...). Too bad I don't still have that viking ship thing. That was epic...

Anyways

I want to make a movie

yo smurf!

we still don't have all our chords/equipment out of your backpack and car. we need to get the charger for the macbook and the charger for mikey's camcorder ASAP. Also, I can't find my digital camera (i seem to remember bringing it in last night with everything else but i cant find it around the house). If you have any of these items please get em back to us so that we can get chugging along on the Arkaos files for the Harshmellows show on Friday.

One thing in the grand scheme of my agenda is to make some documents with the narwallagrams logo. Vectorize/stylize the dead cow logo for the purpose of making screen print patches/shirts/underwear/stickers/ect...

yep lets roll it and smoke it.

NEED CONTENT ENTRIES for a SC MiniBike Winter eZine

Welcome back peeps from Minibike Winter! That shit was mobbin!

The general mood surrounding the trash crew right now seems really motivated so I wanted to use this week to compile everybodies pictures and videos they took up in portland and on the car rides. I'm in the process now of writing out some of the play by plays of the adventures North to South for the Zoo Bomb adventures.

I have a lot of free time this week back and the eagerness to help facilitate an online interactive flash eZine of the escapades that went down.

Email me or burn discs or bring harddrives over of any stuff you guys want to contribute. Drawings, writings, beats, paitings, I'm pretty confident that we can mash it all together and make it dope and hyphy and cool. Andreas and I can work on action scripting it and mills can help us animate stuff for it. The one thing I'm not sure about is web hosting. Does anyone have good webhosting?

But if you want to get down, I'm down this whole week, and beyond this week. But specifically I got the whole week off from work.

So fuck yea, I also need some help fixing up my bikes in the parking lot so if you want to have a mini fix your bike party with R2. I am also down.

sc bike blog, lets blow it up

Pocho Villa Started a bike Blog!

He sez:
I wanted to give you a heads up about a
bike blog I started recently. While so far it's just
short-stories about riding a bike, I'm hoping to start
including announcements about local SC rides/events
(crank mobs, MMR, critical mass, alley cats, etc).

3d green laser scanning

we're about to go to oregon. I just finished my flash class. I'm sitting in my first maya class listening to this guy talk about maya on windows. I'm thinking about laser scanners. and how it costs 2500 for a professional 3d scanner, so cabrillo should get one. and I'm also thinking about how hard it is to make one, because you know, we'd need all kinds of stuff, like maybe a green laser pointer, for instance...

wow though right?
I mean maybe not 2500 dollars good, but free good at least...
I should calm down though right, I mean I know that theres no way. that'd be too awesome

I mean sure, theres plenty of free open source scanning programs for mac, and sure theres plenty of online websites and tutorials, and sure we have everything we need...

but yeah the rotation, how would that work right? for a smooth scan? you must need some fancy electrical oscillator motor or something? right? granted they come with lego and kinex kids kits but I mean that could cost at least 12 dollars...

otherwise we might need something crazy, like a projector...

these people didn't make it open source though, we need to call them about that...

wiimote game. gunslinger

I don't think I made it clear when I said the wiimote.
to reiterate:

now don't think that this is all there is, this is the first day with a wiimote, think about the other features of infared:

best best best best

how about 3d tracking based on the infared tech?>

shut the fuck up and pay attention to this guy, okay?

okay this is obviously the best game ever made and it works great on the wiimote. its like a house of the dead clone in flash with photo's of your buddys.

http://robotubegames.com/play_game.php?gameid=3

this is my new favourite game its the funnest wiimote game ive played, got to be the best bunny bell hoppa'!

and life changes

yo yo yo yo yo so i just took a train to a taxi to the marina mac store to edit some trash crew video and oh yeah BUY MY NEW MACBOOK, AND THE WORLD SHAKES. I GOT 2.2 GHZ 160gb internal, 2 gig ram, and i got a minidvi-vga chord. and chinese new years was going off last night, and i think chris and sean should be on massive. and as for portland i want to make a chariot out of a shopping cart, who wants to help?? and we should get smurfs car over to the sweet to figure out just how many bikes we can fit on his little tin box. and yes we should bring one if not two projectors. we need to invest in a 700-1000 watt inverter (between here and PDX)? off to get some dinner and get back to the cruz

HD VIMEO vs masonic gugleplex vs HD VIMEO

hey hows it going just finished the vulcan edit its seconds less than 60mins.

obviously vimeo is better than youtube but doesn't get enough attention. still I'm going to be posting on there from now on because it accepts HD and has 5x the weekly storage allowment of youtube.

vimeo doesn't have a 10 minute/100mb file limit either, so I put up the whole vlogjellyfishaquarium in one peice, in HD on vimeo and it plays beautifully in both HD flash and SD flash! though I don't think the streamlinks work in HD, to see videos in fullHD requires viewing the video on the page.

you know heres a great example heres my video. you can watch an unnoticeably compressed version in the link below, or you can click on it to watch the HD version on vimeo. I suggest either way because the quality is phenomenally higher than youtubes. either way watch fullscreen, only this time press full screen, dont just zoom into the screen, because on vimeo, like you'll find out. fullscreen HD is the equivelent to watching a DVD, with the same hidden controller features.

aquatic supersonic hyphonic 2007 in a nutshell from stemcell films on Vimeo.

notice that vimeo has embedding costomization as well, so I can change the colours, sizes, and information listed with the flash stream. vimeo is so much better than youtube, it would be decidedly foolish not to use it.

Untitled from stemcell films on Vimeo.

tubetv still rips vimeo files, but vimeo also lets you download your own files on other computers like google video, and yes in HD
vimeo has a higher success rate of "findability" compared to the difficulty of youtubes ever increasingly infinite maze of streaming videos...

vimeo has a OFFICIAL VJ CHANNEL and would probably flip out if we sent them some of our stuff..

which will be on youtube and vimeo soon by the way...

heres vimeos official vj channel:
http://www.vimeo.com/VJs

der.

and the search bar is hidden until you click on it, its a lot prettier...

youtube is google, vimeo is better :)

all and all vimeo is for people who have shit they have high standards for, but dont care if millions see it or not, and its not like youtube is necessarily the place for that anymore, either...

but in case you didnt get it post on sites that will last forever, because streams are unreliable. this massive already has some dead links now because of copyright or whatever youtube took them down.

the more we create and back up on lasting sites the better, and while youtube has a higher percent lookup, vimeo is mroe aimed at planned video art. the difference between youtube, vimeo, veoh and bloggervideo is huge and each has its own purpose, veoh could be great for the vulcan project... people could download it after a 5 minute preview if they wanted...

EXCERPTS FROM ARKAOS DEVELOPER CONVERSATION

EXCERPTS FROM A CONVERSATION WITH THE HEAD OF THE THE ARKAOS DEVELOPMENT TEAM:

ANDREAS NICHOLAS WROTE:
> ...I sometimes wonder if anybody really understands the true potential of this program.....

PIERRE GUILLUY WROTE:
> [IN TERMS OF AN AUDIO ENGINE] I know there's a lot to do with sound, and that's why we won't release a
half working feature.

ANDREAS NICHOLAS WROTE:
> I thought I'd mention that one thing I've been really thinking about
> is how much arkaos should be able to control actionscript games.
> having control of flash games, being able to set their controllers to
> different keys or controllers possibly. I don't know what that would
> entail, but being able to put swf games into arkaos would be HUGE.
> controlling live effects etc. the wii controller... think of the children!
>

PIERRE GUILLUY WROTE:
The flash support on mac will be enhanced in the next version coming in
a few weeks.
Because I like to experiment, I'm playing with the wiimote and my
computer at home, and indeed, there's a huge potential around that!

ANDREAS NICHOLAS WROTE:
