dROID bEATZ

http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifI'm excited to report that I have just booked some personal studio time with Mr. Andy Zenczak of the infamous, Gadgetbox Studios.

I've requested that on either Monday Sept. 24 or Tuesday the 25th, that Andy brings his mobile rig and some microphones over to the Paul Sweet big room for an evening of dirty, stanky, busheiki drum tracking.

What I hope to get out of this is some illy B style drum loops that we can then use to chop, loop, process, and sample to our hearts content. Seems like it will be a good oppurtunity for anybody to suggest any ideas and feels to me that they would love to get loops of for the future. SOOOOO, what I could use from the whole MX crew, besides love, support and encouragement, is to maybe email me some tracks that have feels/styles/voicings/soul that inspires you. I need to get a bunch of ideas on feels and tones I need to capture.

Also, the night of the tracking (I'll let you know what the date ends up being) I could sure use a crew of people to help me capture the right 'vibe'. Mikey, I really would love it if you were there to help hype me up.

After we do the initial drum tracking, I'm scheduled to come to Gadgetbox the first week in October to work with Andy on a Mudbucket-style mixdown. Should be very exciting.

I need to go buy drumsticks.

uH!

Call me crazy but I kinda would spend the rest of my life trying to play this style of music live with a band and simultaneously trying to pull similar style visuals on the fly. I really dig.

Paul Sweet Shows

Yo me and Andreas are getting ready to go up to Steve's in Zayante and set up for the 2nd Ho Down of this year. Should be really fun, Andreas, we need to ask him about that Japanese arcade game, and maybe film it.

So anyways, here's the skinny with the upcoming Paul sweet shows and what we need to do to pull them off:
SEPTEMBER 8TH

THE HARSHMELLOWS
-and-
THE SERENDIPITY PROJECT
8pm $2 entry $1 beer
live art

Things we need to do:
Contact the live artists
Make flyers/print flyers/distribute flyers
Figure out the PA situation
contact security/make large security t-shirts for the burly guys to wear
make some ArKaos sets to VJ (think hip hop shit, wildstyle, breakdancing, ect)

SEPTEMBER 22nd

STRENGTH (pretty confirmed)
SUGAR & GOLD (confirmed)
THE HARSHMELLOWS (confirmed)
THE WALKING DEAD (confirmed)
5 DAYS DIRTY (50% confirmed)
DJ SUBLIMINALZ (not confirmed)
K-FLAY (not confirmed)
HAROOT (confirmed)

2 STAGES!
(BIG room/paul sweet parking lot)

Live art/Glassblowing/Visuals (pretty confirmed)

Things we need to do to make this happen:
Confirm all the partially confirmed guests
Book round the clock parking duty/maybe even a shuttle from Toys'R Us?
Make sick flyers and get em out before August 30th (theres a house party august 31st with harshmellows and serendipity project, it would be great to get flyers out to everyone with all the confirmed details)
Hire more security than at the 8th
have a change box with change in it
set up another glassblowing area/live spary art outside
Get the Dual PA situation under control
Have lots of hands around to help

guerilla drive in

hey I need to reiterate Millz point that we should be involved with the guerilla drive in. we have bomb movies and a lightshow as well as a venue, three things the guerilla drive in desparately needs... I have plenty of of double feature matinees with shorts to play in between... I don't know how but it seems like if we had a place for people to sit down, we could actually charge or at least sell drinks... we really need to start making some money if we want to keep paying the menial bils (cords and eventually bulbs etc)

I want to show Wild in the Streets and Rock & Rule, two short animated pieces and a newsreel, like in the day...

I dunno, just wanted to mention because I think it was an important thought and millz, I back thee up, sorry I didn't have time to see you today, shrink meeting... -see you tomorrow hopefully, I don't have your number any more because my phone exploded. -my new ones the same number though... give me a call

This song fucking SLAYYYYYYS

But the video is just OK. It has it's moments, but I know we could do better. It was shot in my neighborhood, which is kinda cool. But whatever, just crank them speakers and get down.

big sur

hey I drove up to morro bay and back down the coast through big sur and camped at the beach along the way. I tested out my camera, getting road shots and even got some under water stuff, but the housing didn't work properly and let salt water into the camera, nearly destroying it, so I quit early.. I got some gold at the aquarium, lots of sweet jelly fish. I think we need to get agler fully clothed in his suit, probably with the pink shirt he has, under water in in a pool swimming and dancing. -we could even layer the frames on top of each other so he's with jelly fish and salmon and shit.. kind of out of time, but I'm not against even making this video (and spending more time on it) for one of our own songs... -It loks good enough that we shouldn't abandon it even if we run out of time...

I'm stoked millz, see you monday unless I have a lot of shit to do then tuesday, just hit me up...

more people

yo so the two people i think should be added to the massive if they so desire are aeneas in San francisco and our own Ry aggler in SC. these kids have alot to offer to what is going down. and i think we should define massive exchange real soon.

MX VJ's meet GDI

hey kids its mike over here on an extended stay in Brooklyn. I was just reading up on the latest with the guerilla drive in and their protest against the homless laws. I see the MX Djs playing the GDI intermissions. wholeheartedly. i need to get back to the sweet to create patches for myself. but consider it. i think GDI's are bi-monthly. lets rock the local guerilla open space takeover. i will be back in the cruz monday.

MASSIVE SALMON ... OH CHRIST!!! GOD YES lets do this

So anyways... I'm sure you all are well aware of the most hyhptasticbombastichotstepping-hotstepper thing in the world SINCE Ini Kamozie (and his amazing hit song'Hot Stepper' which is

The Chemical Brothers - The SALMON DANCE

but christ, for those of you who have not heard it yet put on some flippers, strike your best fizzhface you bump the tune

Sooooo... anyways now that you and all your friends are up to speed..
The Chemical Brothers are

A.) Touring and playing dates in San Fran, LA (at nocturnal), and Brooklyn

B.) The Chems are having a fucking REEEMMIIX contest currently

the song files are available here

Deadline is the 24th for all submissions on their myspace. We should aim to be done by the 22nd just in case

So yo... to the massive, let's just make the sickest collaborative music-video-remix-rad-paul-sweet-big-room-drumming-projection-fest ... WITH SALMON

I can start working on the remix itself right away. Agler has requested to have me make a post to rally the troups to make any and or all of the following

-Salmon suits
-Paper mache fish masks
-Projections in arkaos of rivers, salmon, underwater tripiness, fish eggs, salmon, hyphy kids

It seems like a fun last minute project that we can all collaborate on and be really wild and try and promote our science with. I know that if we post that as our remix entry that at least SOMEONE will take SOME kind of notice. Anyways should we pick a date to tenatively film this? How long will it take to slap a sloppy edit together of it? Sometime this weekend? Give me a call Andreas and we'll set something up if your down with the idea.

Now float up stream you fishies!
It'll be like this but only with fish suits

rock- artoo out.

Sunday, August 12, 2007

you think you can drum?

you think you know what rock and roll is? this is one hyphy mofo, give him a chance.

T-SHIRTS, massive exchange will need them, and money for them

niche t-shirts sell for 30-60 dollars. lets make super high quality t-shirts in low-volume and sell them to rich americans and japs online... jem t-shirts go for 50 bucks on auctions alone, we should make some simple outline shirts or even get into thinking about a press. I wouldn't mind setting up a store online if I had some help getting them made, and I know we can find either a silkscreener (better quality, more work) or even make a press (check out the video below, easier to make cause its like stamp ons...

if nothing else, sell jesus shirts, sure theres the stamp on crap jesus shirts, and they sell too; but fashionable christian clothing i'm sure is in higher demand than almost anything else...

just throwing it out there.

I will be back in NY tuesday and would love to put my full effort towrds it then as well. i would also like to possibly get some acetate to lazer it on because of durability.

appreciate it

radioforpeople.org, paul sweet radio?

okay I cannot stress, how big of a deal this is. guys, the fcc is giving us the chance to become a legitimate media outlet. the pirate life is going to die, read the sentinal. its time. and not just here, everywhere. show people who have resources to start a radio station before its too late, because from now on the rules are, do what you want: as long as the masons know, -its cool...

www.radioforpeople.org

"the fcc provides the one week window for the community groups to file station applications

this is a once in a generation oppertunity. the fcc is offering a one week window, oct 12-19 during which non profit community groups in the us can file for an application. this is huge, don't let it go without doing what we can.

Think for a moment what a powerful noncommercial radio station could do in your community... people forget that these are bublic airwaves, and the public is not getting access to them.

and right now, from coast to coast, from alaska, hawaii to florida to maine, people are organizing to reclaim the small portion of the public airwaves there are left. the october fcc application window for full power non commercial fm licenses is an opportunity to make a meaningful longterm contribution to your local media landscape - to help give a voice to the voiceless to carry on the fine tradition... check out getradio.org start your own community radio station, and wipe that smile right off rupert murdoch's face"

to agler, podcasts are a legistical nightmare, and radio is for murdoch, but this is the once chance you have for your show, if agler wants a show and gives a shit, this is how. if he doesn't fine, but basically this is the chance for whoever cares.

I dunno, its a big deal, it might sound confusing, but its not really, run you're own radio station, legit. thats about it, and the fcc wont bust you.

you need to be able to prove that you can support it for 3 months, they make it sound like its about money, that way they want you to think it costs 250'000 dollars, don't let that fool you. you need a place and an antenna, both things we either have or know where to get (for far less than it would cost for murdoch)

this could be self-sustaining as well, do you know how much you can get from sponsors like coffeeshops, venues and local stores? new leaf and staff of life, -all legal because this would be legit.

not to mention, bouncing signals from other stations in other towns, states or countries... people pay to have their show played in other areas they cant reach, -have the show streamed live (save maybe 30 seconds) to your station and broadcast it out, -totally legit, and fcc approved. -they pay big money for that, -thats how 91.9 survives (bbc)

sounds kind of interesting to me, we could have a reggae show in the trees, and then rent out a latino show, etc.

think about people who don't have this opportunity. A source for getting internet content broadcast on radiowaves is widely needed.

ask for new york, its good there too, you guys should do what you can or find someone you know to do it. this is probably much more significant over there where you have a larger population per foot ratio!

links again are getradio.org and radioforpeople.org

my house and the mackie board

so r2 came over today and we went through all my shit: trinity, 57channel mackie board and tascam mx2424 digital recorder with 24 inputs, 24bit 48kilihertz

speaking of which, we need 3 25pin to 8XLR snakes
and studio monitors, (speakers with xlr on the back for the board...)

heres some pics... shout out to millz, I'm down to meet tomorrow on the phone early, r2 if no one reaches you before then, let it be known we want to phone conference tomorrow around 10 I heard, you should tell me who what when and where to call... feel bad not knowin...

so theres more, but thats the gist of it, I might of missed a pic, let me know r2, if you notice one...

power cords needed on the drum machine (9 volt weird end) and power cord needed on the digital video interface.

monitor speakers needed for the mackie, tdif cords, umm, looks like this is super lucas, like star wars shit, -but its fucking old, and came out a good 6 months before usb and the imac, so this is all serial cords, the most tech shit on this is ethernet, so serial cords and ethernet are what we have to work with for now.

the mackie machine is a computer, we should be able to install newer cards, I'm going to say I want to put in a couple hundred gigabytes of space and some sort of digital card, maybe firewire? resident nerd: we'll probably need to figure out how hard it is to update the OS and to fix the firmware and maybe drivers for new cards? regular motherboard with pci bust, should be a way...

anywho...

douglas aitken

wow, Doug Aitken... people from new york, you probably know already. but westcoasters, respect. if you ever were wondering why? this is why...

apple new mac updates and totally new imovie

not a place to post this but its way important. imac updates and ilife went through the roof, particularily imovie, a video engineer went and completely built an entirely new movie editor for mac, and is far superior to any consumer app out, in fact I think it rivals final cut. It's definitely easier to use and has better features than final cut. the only thuing about it that I don't like is you can't cut the videos up with a razor like coke, I thought that was pretty glamourous...

but yeah, anyone who cares about video should be stoked...

coming up next: big sur!

that show was great, thanks to r2 for getting there when he did, I literally died the day before the show, and so needless to say I was pretty worn out and glad to see r2. (I wasn't a rockstar until I woke up in the ambulance, now I'm a real rockstar!)

I'm nearly done with my methpsa, have to do some audio to it, if anyone gives a shit, I put up the test footy at youtube (http://www.youtube.com/stemcellfilms) its lame but worth living for, lol...

to millz: I just soundtrack pro working on my mac, and the zoom xlr audio recorder figured out. sometime after the bigsur show billie and dash are going to help me redub the audio and get this cemetary short online, it was worth waiting just a few extra weeks for clean audio in my opinion, because it'le look that much better.

millz, I never cashed the check, sorry about that, life got way to crazy and I figured you probably needed the money. hopefully we can get all that shit figured out about arkaos and the camcorder when you get back, for now just good luck (we all need it)

R2: ask for bigsur, we need to get that figured out, I'm still pretty worn out, I haven't driven in over a week but hopefully I'll be out and about again soon. It looks as though it's pretty much on me to get r2 and I up to big sur.

to r2: I'm kind of hoping you can be more in charge of getting this set up. I'll do what I can but I won't have much time until friday itself... I'll have my computer and harddrive ready, if you can come up with some sort of transportation case for the projector and wires, we'll probably be golden... I'm sorry I haven't been able to help more. If you need any help let me know and I'l try to do what i can. I don't want you to feel like its all on you or that you're the only one who cares, let it be written: I'm way down, we're going to make this happen.

good luck to everyone everywhere. I'm glad to not just be involved in creating video but in the actual evolution of it's presentation. It means more and more to me every hour of every day. -using two projectors blew my mind. it completley changed how I thought about "the zen of vj" or whatever we do.

not sure what else to say, just checking in. you know...

everyone take care!

-andreas out.

boo-ya!

Thank you thank you thank you for everyone helping to throw that shit together last night. Needless to say it was successful, good turnout, no hyphy kids breaking shit, successful multi-walled projections (with lots of planet earth, Jem, and fractals). I do believe that a lot of people went through mad hellish nightmare style life shit just before the party happened, I personally was threatening to quit the studio and was a big emotional wreck earlier this week. But alas, the vibeiness prevailed and a good time was had by all. The music kept going well until the sun came up, at which point many people wandered up on the hill and chilled outside. Great job everyone

I wish I had the whole play-by-play story of what went down but I got at the party close to 1am when it was well underway with Byron Space Circus rocking it. Wubakia had a camera set up on a tri-pod back behind the gaybar/VJ area, I talked to them today and said that they will get me the footage ASAP. I will post that here as soon as I am able.

JEM! is outrageous ... truly TRULY outrageous (woa-oh-oh!)

scary drugs, ambulance, etc...

...I just got out of the ER, I don't have my car so my dad is going to drop me off at the paul sweet in an hour, 3pm, and I'll try to get what I can together.

I already put up the L-brackets, we need a better shelf though, I haven't found one.

things are close, I'll get some sets made for tonight, but I'm pretty wrecked...

regardless, tonight is going to happen, and be rad it will.

motorvate

yo bloods,

I just did some work on the pbwiki. I posted my skillset because i'm an intrepid trailblazer. Then I made a page for all the skillsets (just make your name a link to your skillset when you post it) and put a link to that in the sidebar. There's also placeholders in the sidebar for Contacts, Equipment and Documentation. I figure we can create those pages when we have something to put there.

PBwiki is really fuckin dope and easy to use, especially for quickly whipping up a bunch of interlinked pages. I'm intrigued by the plugins - like the one at the top of my skillset that autogenerates a table of contents based on the header titles. Also the portfolio function looks cool but I havent dove into it yet. But it says you can use it to have pdfs, files, slideshows, etc on a wiki page.

Next step - get the massiveexchange igoogle going on, with different tabs for an RSS feed of this blog, feeds from our flickr accounts, pbwiki, calendar, etc.

h264. haha

ha. hahaha. hahahahaha. its 534 in the morning. and I just finally tried to use some of the files we've been importing in h264. you guessed it. there not supported. so I'm sitting here just thinking about everything i've been importing for the last few days, and how now all we have are a few clips of planet earth... I'm definitely going to convert the files. don't get me wrong, its just why? is there a plug in or something that can make arkaos play h264? I emailed them and hoped to find out...

Wednesday Confrence Call

sorry that it's a little bit of short notice. Me and Mikey were talking tonight and we would definitly like to get as many together as we can for another confrence call Wednesday. I got somet things I'd like to talk about and I will once again take notes.

Confrence call stats are as follows:
Dial in #: (712) 432-2600 (same # as last time)
Pass code: 44964

Think of some things that you'd like to talk about and hopefully we can keep propelling this massive shit onward into the future.

idle important questions

12:55:pst

does anyone know how to use automator? I'd like to make a program that automatically clicks the (remind me later) button, on imtoo dvd ripper.

as it stands without a code [cocky me about serial seeker, couldn't find one :( \] you can get the 5 minutes, but you can easily batch import using the chapter selector, most of hte chapters are less than 5 minutes on the dvds so far... so I just have to sit here and wait for each chapter which takes hours, and then press remind me later...

how do I make automator do that for me?

if you dont tell me, I'll try to figure something out, sounds like a weird mission...
