cave party/underground get-down

hola amigos,

some of you may have heard me or bryan talking about a cave party going down on june 7th, once school's out, but if not, here's the sitch..

we have this underground cave on our property that was most likely used to stash booze and moonshine during the prohibition that doesn't get much play these days. once you squeeze thru the hobbit-hole style door(that's conveniently just wide enough to fit a keg), it's maybe 40 ft deep, from 12-18 feet wide and maybe 10 or 12 ft tall in the back. we run a generator up on top of the cave with the cord running down the breather tube in the back, allowing us to power up lights, sound equipment, video stuff, etc.

so, i wanted to put the invite out to all you massive folks to come out and do your thing in our cave on june 7th(sat. night) at the top of mystery spot road.  we do have to keep it on the smaller side since the property owners live right across from the cave. we're thinking between 40 and 60 folks would be about right, so bring a friend, maybe two, but be kinda selective of who you tell. it should be a good group of our friends and your friends that wanna get down in the cave. but don't worry, since the cave is under a few feet of dirt all the way around, the noise in the cave will be pretty well contained and the party won't get busted.

we have discussed hanging a projector from the ceiling and putting up a white sheet on the back wall so we can have folks vjing some shit.  if any of you want to dj, feel free, we just kinda need a better sound system setup in order to hook everything up and so it sounds halfway decent.

ummm, yeah. i have two more finals left, wed and thurs, and i'm totally free after that. just let me know if you wanna come check it out the cave beforehand , just to see what you're working with.  we're open to suggestions, ideas, etc, so throw 'em at me.

oh, and carpooling is a good idea since we don't have tons of parking, but we'll figure all that out later, and everyone should BRING A FLASHLIGHT and a cup for the keg.

if you need to get a hold of me, my number's 530.277.2570

hope all is well.
peace

NASA DINNER AT AMES... WHOS GOIN?

So myself, R2, who else is going to dinner at Ames on June 5th?

Naaaaassa!

bear cave gets mobile!

so today marks kind of the unofficial closing of the bear cave as it once was. don't get me wrong, it's still right here, in my heart but the current configuration as a jam/work space for me and millz is looking for a new tenant.

it would be awesome if we could get someone we knew or someone we knew would not be a complete hagard beezy. but alas, im having kind of a big personal garage sale.

you can bid on my mpc, if you'd like.

im also selling a fatty technics 1210M5G turntable with all my records. i got some good stuff if you want to grab some choice ones.

the logic in behind this personal belonging alchemy is that I want to transmute all my shizo into as many laptops, harddrives, projectors, bike mounts, and backpacks as i can.

hit me up if you want some shizo

Ring, Ring, Ring, Bananarchy

Hey Kids, this is Aaron (if you were at the paul sweet house about two weeks ago I was Jade's tall traveling companion/bodyguard). I'm tossing my able, idle hands into the massive exchange pot and hopefully I've got something to offer that you black emporers can use in your nefarious goings-on. I'm a filmmaker, plain and simple, and the manipulation of visible light is my game, anything and everything involving cameras, lights, sets, films, documentaries, scripts, etc is my passion. Other than that, if you need a place to stay in brooklyn, always hit me up.

Shall we put in the work to make their bodies jerk?

Visual Psyphy [BUSHIKIWHOMP pt. 2]

Ey Narwallbangers,

I just had a scan sesh and uploaded a put a ton of pics to the bushikiwhomp fuckflickr. Now get psyphy with that shit!!!

Also, is this shit in an optimal format? hi enough res? choice content? holla back.

last day in town, juracid bikes meeting

So me and Agler got a date with some trains on the 13th, but this is where we will be our last night in the bay. it is a fundraier for the burningman temple. and our going away party!?? but that shit is 15 days away. so i would really like to sit down with all juracid bikes burningman peeps and just talk about shit that we are going to try to pull. can we pull this guys?

plus check out my favorite artist of this year BLU here

apparently, intensity > extensivity

Shalomizan, once again, from the mix room.

life is getting very fun and challenging, and as some of you know my position at the PaulSweetery grows more impermanent each day. So over the last few days I've been pushing interactions that may help me thrive in my gypsifyed state of being.

This weekend I was in Belden, CA: Pop. 23.
I was helping the space circus out with a little bit of set up for the Bobolink festival. Which, to my suprise, ended up not being a COMPLETE hippy romp that got rained out and lost a bunch of money due to low ticket sales,
why?
because, somehow, someway, some PSYPHY-ass motherfuckrz weaseled their way in and fucking KILLED it on the dubstep tip. every stage, every night, sick.

checkout:

David Starfire

Anyways, since it was such a small and long (3 and a half days) festival I had a good amount of time to name drop Narwallagram, meet some promoters, and get loose like a cannon when they dropped the nasty, cough-syrup, basslines.

There was also a gentleman I met named Ryan, with a merry band who said he does all manner of promotion under the name Champagne and Bacon. He's putting on the Cirque Du Soulstice. But more importantly he said he would be interested in getting us out to Reno in August to VJ for the Glitch Mob and other gigs. Tall promises for someone who's never seen our VJ stuff..

there was a big pit in my stomach the whole time not being able to VJ at the drop of the hat. so many opportunities missed.

sooo, tommorow (er today) Ima meet with Andreas at 1o'clock to work on
1.) business cards
2.) VJ promo reel (in HD of course)
3.) website construction
4.) any sort of creative mashing that may be nessessary to complete the above tasks.

and...

project BUSHIKIWHOMP

So R2 made this proposition to me the other day, that as I x-acto my way thru infinite national geographics, I should scan them suckers before I fuck with em, put em up and then he + whoever will chop up that same source material and use them for any manner of visual remixing. So I get more inspiration to dig in the crates, you all get a nicely curated, selection of hi-res natty-G dankness, and we all get to see how various folks interpret the same source material.

So to that end, I made an image gallery w\ fuckflickr (open-source, full featured, lo-profile, extensible image gallery software developed by fffff.at labs). One is up, with 3 pics in it, minimally fucked with. Many, many, many more to come. All are jpgs scanned at 150 dpi. If y'all want TIFFs, or something else, lemme know.

Project BushikiWhomp is also for me an exploration of the parallels between visual collage and audio collage (specifically sample based hip-hop and electronic music), and developing, by analogy, visual (tr/h)ip-hop that is sample based as opposed to graff based. And then on top of that, by sharing source material (be that code, images, sampled records and multitracks etc) and documenting our process, we are doing are part to make open source the 6th element of hip hop. Good minds of the massive, weigh in on this emerging field!

burningman first timers guide

yo fools that are going to burningman. read this. twice.

L1nuX zuperztar: you heard it here f1rst

I've been testing my linux disks, they work really well! I still need internet to compile packages I can't include on the disk yet (I haven't figured out how to) but you know how it goes...

I just wanted to point out a few things you could check out for yourself so you didn't have to just believe me about this shit...

Interested in seeing windows work in linux? well check out . there you will find out all you need to know about programs tested and working in wine...Not that everything is perfect mind you, some dont work (not many) some jitter a little, others lag... but mostly, its 2008, and all is well, quite often you'll find that they run faster in linux emulation than on windows itself...

there are many programs already opensource too, for good music editor whatever linux programs, there are a plenty, but not much is as nice and pretty as the lmms linux multimedia studio

check out ardour

hydrogen is a great drum sequencer

and hey this might seem a little off topic, but people have been really all about tibet recently, and having gone to san fransisco and seen the asians myself, I can safely say white peoplz completely misunderstand whats going on...

I met asians telling me that he's not a vegitarian, that the PRC put him in power and he turned on the chinese dragons for the babylon dragons and that at his last birthday he had shrunken heads on spikes centuries old...

the dalai lama is equivelent to a pope, he is of a royal line of priests, (sound kinda like babylon?)

and is heavily supported by the UN united nations (I like that cause its the prefix un-something means the opposite of what it is)

he doesn't want free tibet, he wants "autonomous" tibet, meaning he wants a UN police state the same way israel is.

HMMMMMMMM? israel and tibet... the two most important places in the world to the nazi's?

you should know that the nazi's went to tibet and were embraced by the last dalai lama with open arms...
also the UN was and still is mainly a puppet of the Lucis trust, originally titled the Luciferien trust, created in 1922 by Alice and Foster Bailey. -they run a magic school in england that many high ranking UN are in.

orignially alice and foster bailer were in the grand Tibettan lodge before starting the arcane school of magic which still runs to this day...

the illuminati was called the bavarian lodge of the grand orient referring to tibet.

and the dalai lama loves these guys..

so imagine it: egypt and israel, tibet and the forbidden city, the vatican and washington DC... the occultist district of babylon. giant towers reaching into the heavens, and fully cybornetic black ops police in the street with bullitproof glass shields and solid helmets with cameras on the outside, screens on the inside.

the dalai lama loves it, and he can't wait for a return to his state as chief magician of the Tibetan orient.

linux are ready for you... but is you ready for linux?

I'm suprised I get to be the first person to say the massive looks beautiful. I was watching as you were uploading it, seeing it get better. I kind of respect that sort of communicatable silence. Once you finished I took it and put it into arkaos, bending it and mashing it with the face of the panchen lama (not the communist chinese puppet, the original panchen lama the chinese babylon kidnapped)

If you think I have been ignoring you, I have not. as I'm sure at least you [r2] are with recording, I am as well rather busy. spending a lot of time with maitland these days, and finally doing some yoga.... thank god!

One thing that irritates me is how much apple sucks... I hate to admit it, but time to... apple used to be cool, and they still have cool things, I still prefer apple imove08 and fcp over cinelarra or kino or something, but the thing about apple is its proprietary, and has to spend too much time fucking around... apple is 10 percent linux and 90 percent bullshit. I learned this the one time I tried to INSTALL a family guy episode on iTunes... when you need to INSTALL a movie, thats bullshit...

so in case anyone needed to know, linux is fully operational with KDE4. I have compiled a disk which should have out of box support on just about any computer. That means you should be able to just pop the disk in and in 5 minutes have glossly opensource wifi-supported goodness. comes with firefox3 and the new oxygen theme (better than apple aqua in a lot of ways, and completely open/manipulatable) as well as VLC, amarok (a itunes REPLACEMENT) k9copy for dvd and mp4 ripping.

Once again, out of the box, even in a shit old computer, you should be able to do at least everything you do on a proprietary system: all internet, all dvd/cd reading, writing, games and much more. I mean MUCH more (and that doesn't even count wine)

Gimp is surprisingly powerful, it really shocked me, in a lot of ways it outdoes photoshop, you should really look it up... and Karbon is the vector software R2 needs...

-and wine works surprisingly well to read windows applications natively in linux. I didn't expect much, but apparently wine is used by warcraft and other video game enthusiasts so the demands are strong... I'm suprised that it can just read windows files, without windows... legally... its baffling me...

just imagine running windows CS3 natively on a linux system, after effects and all... or maybe sony vegas or acid? how about ableton? I mean I can't actually think of any other windows programs you'd want, but I'm sure there are actually quite a few you wouldnt mind running...

also kde4 can run on mac, so anything linux not compiled for mac (not that theres much you can't compile from source onto mac) you can just run it natively now in mac. Linux is just blurring the lines with reality...

I've also been trying to deal with my traffic violations, court is nonsense... I have to go again on tuesday morning and then again next tuesday...

There will be both vegetarian and vegan food available.

This should be lots of fun! Please come if you can, and help us make sure Yuri's Night just keeps getting better and better!

Please let us know whether or not you'll be able to make it by sending email to info@yurisnightbayarea.com , so we make sure we have the right amount of food. Thanks!

Oops, I forgot one more very important thing:

Feel free to invite other Yuri's-Night-related people to join us for dinner! Do you want to reward some of your crew for working extra hard? Are there some Yuri's Night artists, musicians, tech presenters, performers, or any other folks who you think would enjoy a peek behind the scenes? Now's your chance! As long as we know about it soon, we can make room for anyone you want to bring.

But, you must lest us know soon so NASA can get enough food!

See you soon!

Burning Man & Leave No Trace

Hey people (and by people I mean all those interesting in participating in our Burning Man theme camp, Juracid Bikes),

I spent about 2+ hours today refining the template (and filling out it's various blanks) for the Leave No Trace Plan for our theme camp, and sent it in. It's way too long to post up here (approx 6 typed pages), so please give me your e-mails so I can send it to you.

We ALL need to read it, so that we're all on the same page. I know, I know, it's long, but I hear this is one of the most important parts of the application. So pull up a chair, and just DO IT. I've named myself clean up ambassador (which means I oversee all things clean up). I chose myself because I wanted to send it in asap and didn't think it would be very nice to make someone else be Ambassador without asking them. If you want to be the clean up Ambassador for our camp, or have problems with me being the Ambassador, let me know - I'm sure we can change it up.

Also, I think we should consider constructing an evaporation pond for our camp.

Yay. Any questions, comments, concerns? I'm tired. Ask me after the weekend.

Party Time

So, we are about to bike up to SF right now for the glitch mob show, but I want to let everyone know about Freqo de Mayo
happening Saturday at Temple night club. Tipper, Phat Conductor, an-ten-nae, and Mozaic plus many more are on the line up. We are gonna stick around for that, and if you can make it to the city tomorrow you definitely should try. Dance into the Future.

friday

I also wanted to say that this friday Mad Zackkk and Jessee are throwing the KICK DRUM PARTY at the Kresge Town hall and the narwallagrams have been requested for visual appeal and digital glamor.

I was definitly planning on going to the Glitch Mob show in the city, but I havent gotten my ticket yet. I hafta say that I personally want to VJ- (Jes said he'd hook us up with the VIP treatment) but if we VJ I'd like to get a bit more organized. Have cables coiled up. Computers running video feeds into each other and have the cameras working with LED bike lights on top.

Maybe I dunno, laser tag running into arkaos, EH? c'mon

b3ltane

millz, i understand that you obtained savage footage of boreta this weekend.

i humbly request that narwallagram get together and work on combining the footage with arkaos, final cut, and photoshop cs3 and putting it up in sections on the internet.

burningman benefit on the 16th of may

yo guys so i just got back from the maker fair and a hip hop show at the greenhouse in san fran. the maker fair was amazing and i encourage everyone to go next year. so we are throwing our first burningman benefit party in two weeks on the 16th. i want to get some details together so we can make a proper flier. shall we say: starts at sundown 8pmish and Acrisia will can play at like 10isness and maybe we can get another band??!!! and then we can get djs going around 11-12 until theyre done, or we run out of gas for the generator. and what do you guys think about 2kegs. dollar a beer?! maybe some jungle juice, as well or something. and some projections of course. i figure we could hit people with the cover somewheres on the beginning of the path.
and remember bring a sleeping bag, a large trout pillow and a box of fireworks and we'll have a darn tootin good time

double VJ mobilization

Me and Smurf repped narwallagram last night at 2 parties. The first one was cor Kari's friend Brookings' Birthday party. Mostly out of towners from the Bay Area, aparently they are taking an interest in whats going on here in Santa Cruz. Anyways yea. It was super fun for me to twiddle around in arKaos.. I'd forgotten how unbelievably fun it is, if we dedicated a STRAIGHT weekend to JUST VJ stuff (getting clips/moods organized, making sets with all the tweakable parameters assigned to the Alesis, making some VJ reels to post on Vimeo and show to Nexxus) we would have SUPER tight science. It's essential

Smurf, if you got any contacts last night from them, we should tell them ALL about the fundraiser Burningman party [the one were having a house meeting for at 420 today]

Yea, so afterward we decided to come up and see what was crackin at the Beltane party because we had heard Bassnectar was about to play. We ended up doing 2 projectors out of the car but we had a total of 4 with us. People were appreciative of the visuals in the trees, yes, but if we had had a little bit more communication with one of the people throwing the event we might have been able to bust something a WHOLE lot sicker.

All I'm saying is that I hope this big Bay Area party scene understands what Narwallagram is all about BEFORE they see our science on the playa.

8 Bit Glitch Box

yea! quit my job and am now banking on the fact my good music karma will take me on a wave of psychotrimorphic bliss and to foster the seeds of change for this world forever to come from now! yES

anyways, made 3 mix tapes with millz. shaved half my face off with a pavement slab. mixed a song on the byron record. played music with eli and zach: which resulted in MPC1000 sequencing stuff into MIDINES with amazing results.

I'd like to get together again and work on that even more, like MPC with a working MIDI keyboard controller hooked up into it (zach's juno or ... something else). Maybe also running the output of the NES into ELi's effects boxes. I'm game for anything, all I know is that I had fun today but I'm serious about emoting intense vibes through the use of dirty electronics

\/^\/ UTAG: United Technical Artist's Guild \/^\/ Cabrillo AGENDA

also tell will I really want to work on something to say to the school, and I've been confused about how much or what I can really say, I don't want to seem crazy and (smurflike)

basically I want to talk about the importance of synergy at cabrillo, and maybe that's what I'm afraid is stepping bounds...

but If there was only one thing I could say, I'd tell them to to truly invest time, energy, resources, empathy and money into the computer science, art and engineering departments in educational system. -and listen to the students.

Cabrillo offers something specific to many students. In fact it's that individualized education that they are interested in, that they are willing to learn from. Students at Cabrillo attend because they believe it will be valuable to their future, that they will earn a respected education while learning what they need to know for their future.

This is Cabrillo's strength, but it requires synergy, adaptability, and openness. Especially today.

I understand the school wants to combat the grant issue, the school can't spend as much money cause of budget cuts, (and I'm personally worried the school will cut teachers, and obviously not the tenured ones so outgoes the new progressive ones that were worth a damn) so the obvious:

Time for some technological recycling, I think its important to installing linux on the pc boxes. theres already a large enough linux community autonomously, it's time that cabrillo support them and other groups. They could turn useless deadgreyboxes into active powerful workforces.

If cabrillo were to encourage and stimulate the resources of small groups, it could avoid costly programs to recover for not having done so in the future. This makes sense because assisting the incentive to reach the students own goals, as opposed to giving
incentive to reach the schools means the student is getting the education they want and need.

This is the natural progression, and is the only way to provide sustainable education in such a rapidly evolving world.

This leads to the other important thing:

time for blender!

Cabrillo's 3d arts department is archaic. The Maya software is outdated and costly. The school does not have a 3d scanner, the windows system old dell computers are too slow to render and to be honest it's dark and dingy like 1994.

The class teaches traditional modeling values, like measuring in 3d space to make virtual objects, but it's the old paper method, rulers and slide rules.

Now, I understand not everyone may have been monitoring the development of CGI, but this is 2008, so let me elucidate my point:

We live in an age of internet and opensource, free software and forum based education progression .
Windows is dead and has been superseded. Linux is superior and ready to run on old computers, maximizing their efficiency.
Blender is an free opensource 3d modeling program and community. It has been used in hollywood films such as Spiderman 2 and 3, and can be used to create anything from simple 3d models to intricate films or games. The Blender community continually adds new features and tutorials, as well as free models. The Blender community also continually runs official opensource projects, creating full professional short films or even games entirely with the help of a forum. This allows for learning both by the faculty and the pupil as they progress through the difficult terrain of accomplishing something that hasn't really been done.
Right now they are creating a full professional 3d game called Apricot, about giant Bunny Rabbits.

Blender can be used on any computer for free, without license, ever.

An intricate piece of this 3d puzzle is the 3d scanner. 3d Laser Scanners are used to measure an object to be put into a computer. In the old days 3d models and objects had to be dafted on graph paper, then the geometry was replaced by computers. Eventually machines were developed scanned the volume of an object using laser reflection to measure within nanometers.

Rather than spend days or week drafting a model, an action figure or a toy plane could be scanned into the computer instantly. It is because of this that within the last 10 years 3d scanning has become a vital and necessary tool, as important as the mouse or computer or the math itself.

Cabrillo does not have a 3d scanner. 10 years ago this may have been for good reason, because up until a few years ago, 3d scanners were very expensive, even for some schools. However, this is 2008, and due to product and demand 3d scanners have become exceedingly affordable. One such model is the NextEngine. a small model scanner that can be purchased for about the price of an imac...

Friends, Dancers, Beautiful people,

My self-thrown birthday party is ON.

The plan is this:
Saturday May 3rd, 5-8 beach fun at Seabright beach in Santa Cruz - bring your best beach games, your own beverages (well-concealed), and something delicious for a potluck feast.

Then, drink your sparks or Kombucha and prepare for an evening of nsst nsst nsst and hip swinging beats at the Santa Cruz Vet's hall (studio A) from 8:30-Midnight. Multiple DJs, multiple dance-gasms. Feel free to bring a friend or two - first of all, I probably forgot people on this list I didn't mean to forget, and the dance room has a capacity above how many folks I'm expecting. And especially santa cruz peeps, I'm always looking to meet folks here as I'm new!

For those of you out-of towners, plan on sleeping at my house (bring sleeping bag), having breakfast, dancing some more if you're feeling it, Dance Church style, and maybe even an afternoon hike.

Many more details and directions and pretty pictures in the attached logistics doc. Email or call me (314 550 6559) if you have questions.

And finally, CARPOOLING - if you're coming from the east bay, some folks need rides. their names and emails are "Cara Bertron" , "Sigal Shoham" , "Ben Palmquist" .

If you need a ride let me know, and if you can give rides let me know, and I'll try to coordinate for you all.

SO EXCITED to see any and all of you who can make it.
